Frequently asked questions
-
If you’re just starting out, look for a compact, entry-level DSLR or mirrorless camera. These offer automatic shooting modes, intuitive controls, and – for DSLR and mirrorless cameras – access to interchangeable lenses, which are perfect for learning photography fundamentals.
-
DSLR cameras use an optical viewfinder and mirror mechanism, while mirrorless cameras rely on electronic viewfinders and offer lighter, more compact designs. Both deliver excellent image quality.
-
Start with Scene Intelligent Auto (green mode). Your camera automatically adjusts settings for the scene. Once you’re comfortable, experiment with Aperture Priority (Av), Shutter Priority (Tv), and Manual (M) modes to take more creative control.
-
Use the built-in flash if you’re using a compact, or if you’re using a DSLR or mirrorless camera use a fast enough shutter speed to avoid blur – especially if your subject is moving. Stabilise your camera with both hands or a tripod, and make sure your focus point is on your subject. Turning on Image Stabilization (IS) on your lens also helps in low-light situations.
-
Exposure depends on three settings: aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. With Av, Tv, and M modes, you gain full control of aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, so you can easily make your photos brighter, darker, or more creative. Or why not try using the Exposure Compensation (+/– button) to quickly adjust brightness, without switching to manual mode.
-
Some cameras are sold with a lens as part of a kit (for example, the RF-S 18-45mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM, RF 24-50mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM and RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM zooms). These lenses are versatile for everyday photography, but as you progress, consider adding the RF 50mm F1.8 STM lens for portraits, or the RF-S 55-210mm F5-7.1 IS STM lens for zoom shots to get closer. Canon’s RF and EF lens ranges offer plenty of options as you grow. Compacts can provide strong zoom performance, too, but always review the camera’s focal length range to ensure it meets your needs.
-
Most Canon cameras feature built-in Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Download the Canon Camera Connect app to easily transfer photos to your smartphone. For computers, upload to image.Canon or use a USB cable or card reader to copy files directly via the EOS Utility.
-
Practice one element at a time. Start with Aperture Priority (Av) to see how aperture affects background blur, then try Shutter Priority (Tv) to capture or freeze motion. Gradually move to Manual (M) once you understand how all three exposure modes interact.
-
Use a wide aperture (low f-number) to let in more light and increase the ISO if needed. A tripod helps prevent blur during longer exposures. You can also enable Night Scene mode, if your camera has it, for automatic optimisation. For extra impact, consider using flash to freeze your subject while a slow shutter speed adds extra background blur. You can use flash creatively like this on compacts which have flash built-in or buy a compatible Speedlite flash for a more powerful solution.
